2. Ethernet
Ethernet is a family of standards that covers
- The physical design of plugs, sockets and cables
- How devices will start, stop and handle data exchange
- How to handle network errors
In any network, the plugs must fit into the sockets; the cable must behave the same way no matter who you buy it from. You should be able to purchase network cards from one supplier and know that they will work with cards from another supplier. And so part of the Ethernet standards covers all these physical details.
